The Wide Country is a 28-segment Western television series which aired new episodes on NBC from September 20, 1962, to April 25, 1963. It starred 34-year-old Earl Holliman and 26-year-old Andrew Prine as brothers, Mitch and Andy Guthrie, respectively, who are traveling rodeo competitors. In the recurring story line, older, wiser brother Mitch, a champion bronco rider, discourages Andy from following in Mitch's footsteps.

The pilot for the series entitled "Second Chance" was aired on March 13, 1962, on the anthology Alcoa Premiere on ABC. The Wide Country is similar to the ABC series Stoney Burke, starring Jack Lord as a rodeo performer, which aired thirty-two episodes during the same season.

Slim Pickens appeared in four episodes of The Wide Country as Slim Walker. Other guest stars were Bruce Yarnell of NBC's The Outlaws, John Dehner of CBS's The Doris Day Show, Ray Teal of Bonanza (three episodes), and Jay Novello, Lyle Talbot of The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, child actor Roger Mobley, and Barbara Parkins of Peyton Place (two episodes each), and Conlan Carter, later of ABC's Combat! (one episode).
